Cape Town International Airport scoops Best Airport in Africa Award
Friday, March 09, 2012 | 00:00
Airports Company South Africa, Cape Town International Airport (ACSA CTIA) has been awarded the Best Airport in Africa by the Airports Council International (ACI) in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) global awards. The award ceremony, which will take place on 24 May 2012 at the ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly, Conference & Exhibition in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, will acknowledge top performing airports across the world.
CTIA is Africa’s most award winning airport, last year also having scooped the ACI Best Airport in Africa Award as well as the Best Improved Airport as well as the Internationally recognised Skyrax Award for Best Airport for staff service excellence. “The consistency with which is the airport achieves these award confirms our commitment to continuous improvement and demonstrates that the airports achievements are not once off”, says Deidre Davids, Communications Manager, Airports Company South Africa: Cape Town International Airport.
Other airports in the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) stable who won awards include King Shaka International Airport as 3rd Best Airport in Africa, Upington International Airport for Best Regional Airport and East London Airport as the Most Improved Airport in service excellence. Since its commencement in 2006, the ASQ Awards have become the world’s leading airport passenger satisfaction benchmark with over 200 airports participating in over 50 countries. What sets it apart from other surveys is that it is interview based and has been scientifically designed to provide a statistically accurate reflection of service levels in an airport. Every month, at all participating airports, departing passengers are interviewed at the gate while the experience is fresh in their minds. All the airports use the same questionnaire and follow the same methodology while taking into consideration each airport’s uniqueness with regards to its traffic throughput to ensure comparable results. “We are extremely proud of this accolade, which not only bodes well for the airport, but the region and our country as a whole. By achieving consistent awards in various industries Cape Town continues to positively position itself on the global map. As an airport fraternity we are very pleased to be doing our bit and we hope that all Capetonians will celebrate this achievement with us”, continued Davids.
In the 2010 surveys, some of the areas the airport did not score well in were Wifi internet access, ease of finding your way around as well as ease of using signage. It ranked high in restaurant value, trolley availability, parking availability and parking facilities and cleanliness of washrooms. “For the 2011 survey, we have improved on all the areas where we had low scores in 2010, with an impressive consistent improvement in ease of finding your way around the airport and we maintained all our highest rankings for 2010. Delivering an excellent customer service experience is an ongoing focus for CTIA and its airport community. We also value the feedback we receive from our airport users, both negative and positive, as these assist us in consistently improving for the benefit of the airport user,” added Davids.
“We know that we do not always get things right, but everyday there is a team of people hard at work to deliver a positive airport experience, a team of people committed to making a positive difference. These awards confirm that we remain at the cutting edge of airport service delivery and shows that we do not sit on our laurels”, concluded Davids.
