New Cycle Tour faciliation point at Cape Town International Airport
Tuesday, March 08, 2011 | 00:00

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) today, 8 March 2011, announced that the bicycle collection and drop off point at Cape Town International Airport has been moved to Parkade 1.  Cyclists collecting their bicycles are requested to follow the directional signage toward Parkade 1 before collecting their hired vehicles. On the return trip they should first drop off their hired vehicle and then make their way to Parkade 1 where they will drop off their bicycle.

Last year, the airport processed approximately 9 000 bicycles ahead of the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay cycle tour and this year between 9 000 and 10 000 bicycles are once again expected. Most of the bicycles are expected to pass through the airport between Wednesday 9 March and Friday 11 March, which are the peak days.

Cape Town International Airport has been playing a pivotal role in the facilitation of the Cycle Tour for a number of years now. With the opening of the Central Terminal Building, the airport layout has changed necessitating that a new bicycle pick up and drop off point gets used.  “To ensure a smooth facilitation for the cyclists, the ACSA CTIA operations team in partnership with airlines and baggage handlers have deemed it necessary to relocate the facilitation process closer to the Central Terminal Building and public transit,” says Deidre Hendricks, Communications Manager, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), CTIA.   Directional signage and floor decals from the Domestic Arrivals baggage hall all the way through to the facilitation area have been installed.  A Cycle Tour information desk is clearly visible in the baggage hall with a second one located in the facilitation area at Parkade 1 in order to assist cyclists.

“To ensure that the passengers taking part in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour are well aware of these changes, we have designed flyers with the relevant information and directional maps.  These will be distributed to all cyclists at their points of departure via the Domestic airlines they fly with.  Another flyer with information and routes to drop off the bicycles, after the cycle event, will be available at all the car rental companies at the airport,” continued Hendricks.

The ACSA CTIA website (www.airports.co.za ) has also been updated with all the cycle tour information and maps with the information also being uploaded in the Cycle Tour Organisers’ website www.cycletour.co.za

The arrivals facilitation started 6th of March until to the 12th of March with the departures starting in the evening of the 13th March till the 18th of March.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Information Flyers are available on request.
