During a routine perimeter patrol, a person was found to be inside the perimeter of the Bloemfontein airport. The person was immediately apprehended and taken to the SAPS at the airport.
While at the police station, it would seem the person became violent with the police officers and tried to escape with a police officer’s firearm.
The suspect ran towards the public car park when the police fired shots that injured the suspect who was arrested and taken to the hospital.
The matter is being investigated and reported to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as to the manner in which the suspect entered the airport fence. At no time was the suspect on the runway of the airport and there were no major delays due to the incident.
Airports Company South Africa would like to thank the relevant role players for their efforts during this incident and would like to reassure the public that their safety and security is our main priority at the airport.
Since this is a police matter any further information will be issued via SAPS and the contact person is Captain Kuhn on 051 5076841.
