The R500 million multi-storey parking extension at O.R. Tambo International Airport is now open to the public. The new parking facility adds 5 300 parking bays on 7 levels to the airport precinct’s existing 5000 bays. Of these new bays 2000 were commissioned in early 2008. The new parking facility joins to the existing multi-storey parking on most levels.
Steven Maphalla, the airport’s Landside Manager says “The public will have easy access to the parking from both the road and the terminal. Drivers will be able to access the parking via existing parking entrances along the lower and upper roadways in front of the terminal, and a new one along the central spine road. From these entrances they can navigate across seven floors of parking via the ramps found throughout the parking facility.”
Bay detection technology has already been implemented in the new parking so as to make identifying of available parking easier for drivers. The lights above each bay are green when empty and red when occupied. Blue lights denote wider parking bays reserved for those with official disabled parking stickers on their cars. Throughout the parking there are indicators to show how many and where available parking is located.
Access from the west end of the parking is made easy via covered walkways which lead to the Central Terminal Building on floors one to four of the multi-story parking. Users will be able to access the terminal buildings from the parking on level two directly into the retail mall via connecting walkways.
For international passengers an underground walkway extends from the parking and connects on the upper level of the basement parking (Parkade 1) opposite the parking paypoints.
Paypoints are also conveniently located in two areas of the new parking facility, along with lifts, escalators and steps that allows easy movement by visitors with luggage between floors. Ablution facilities have also been made available for the convenience of visitors.
“We are very proud of the parking product,” says Kesavan Naicker Projects Manager at O. R. Tambo International Airport. “Even with the cost of building having increased dramatically over the past few years we have managed to come in millions under budget on this development. By working closely with our contractors we were able to make available sections of the parking available to the public well before the completion date without disrupting the building schedule.”
Rates for the parking will be the same as those in the existing multi-storey parkade. Details for these and all other parking at the airport can be found on the ACSA website on www.airports.co.za. The public can also call 086 727 7888 with any queries about the parking facilities. At the airport iHelp agents in the terminal building wearing orange waist coats will be on hand to assist the public.
