ACSA hands over tow truck to EMPD
Thursday, May 24, 2007 | 00:00

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) at O.R. Tambo International Airport has handed over a tow truck to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) based at the airport. After identifying that an unacceptable amount of cars’ park illegally on a daily basis within the airport precinct, ACSA requested that the EMPD render a towing service exclusive to O.R. Tambo.

Illegally parked cars at O.R. Tambo’s various parking lots and curb sides are currently inadvertently causing traffic congestion and a huge amount of frustration to visitors at the airport. According to ACSA’s Landside Manager, Kesavan Naicker “ACSA is committed to curbing the increasing scourge of traffic congestion within the airport precinct, and by making a dedicated tow truck vehicle available to the EMPD, I do believe that we can make a difference.”

Following the handover of over the vehicle, the EMPD will begin operating the towing service at the beginning of next month. EMPD officials will be authorised to tow all illegally parked vehicle to predetermined barking bays within the airport precinct and will only be released to the owners on payment of the applicable fees.

Chief of Police, Mr Robert McBride commented, “The EMPD is pleased to be working with a partner that is as committed as ACSA . In making a tow truck available to us on a 24-hour basis, exclusively for use at O.R. Tambo, we are confident that illegal parking at the airport will soon be a thing of the past. ”

“Our ultimate aim is to maintain user friendly parking lots and road systems within our jurisdiction as far as possible, and partnerships such as these are in-valuable in achieving this goal, ” added Naicker.

The handover comes hot on the heels of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), formalising the relationship between the EMPD and O.R. Tambo which took place last month. The agreement made provision for the EMPD Precinct at O.R. Tambo to operate 24 hours a day, every day of the week and is currently being manned by a about of 50 metropolitan police officers.
