Q: What is a LAG?
LAG stands for Liquids, Aerosols and Gels. If you can POUR it, PUMP it, SQUEEZE it, SPREAD it, SMEAR it, SPRAY it or SPILL it, it is considered a LAG.
Q: Does this apply to all flights?
No. The LAGs regulations ONLY apply to HAND LUGGAGE on INTERNATIONAL flights.
Q: When will this happen?
The regulations will come into effect from 01 June 2007.
Q: How big is a 100ml container?
It is equal to a standard size medicine bottle. You can usually check the capacity of your container by looking at the label.
Q: Are there any exceptions?
There are only two exceptions, medication and items required for dietary purposes, including baby foods. Please refer below for more information.
Q: Are there any changes for checked-in luggage?
No. the new security regulation apply to hand luggage ONLY.
Q: Can I bring medication on board?
Yes, carry-on and checked in. These will be inspected by security to ensure prohibited items are not being concealed. You may be asked for a prescription, so please ensure you carry it with you. You may also be asked to taste your medication in the presence of security personnel.
Q: Can I bring baby food on board?
Yes, baby food including formula and milk is exempted provided you are travelling WITH your baby. You may be asked to taste your formula/milk in the presence of security personnel.
Q: Can I bring liquids that form part of a special diet on board?
Yes, however you may be asked to prove the necessity and authenticity of the liquids to security personnel. You may be asked to taste these items in the presence of security personnel.
Q: What happens if I do not comply?
Security staff WILL insist you dispose of ANY Liquid, Aerosol or Gel in your possession that does not comply fully with the legislation. These will be destroyed, and are IRRETRIEVABLE.
Q: What happens if I am non-compliant with the new regulations and I have to dispose of items – can I get them back?
Items that you dispose of will be destroyed. They will NOT be kept aside for collection at a later stage.
Q: What is ACSA doing to assist compliance?
ACSA is providing plastic bags free of charge for an interim period of one month at all key access points in international airports.
Q: Can I use my own plastic bag?
Yes you may, provided that the bag adheres to the correct size, volume and requirements, ie the bag is durable, transparent, resealable, should be no more than 20cm x 20cm in size and should be no more than one litre in capacity.
Q: What must I do to comply?
Understand why this is required. While packing any carry-on baggage, prepare the resealable bag with items that you may need during your flight and comply with the restrictions. When queing at security have the bag ready for inspection so that you don't delaying passengers behind you in the queue.

Q: Can I still buy duty-free items?
Yes, you may; duty-free items will be given to you in a specially sealed bag. Duty-free shoppers can rest assured that they can still buy duty-free items at the airport but must be mindful of the fact that the transfer and termination regulations pertaining to duty-free LAGs purchases differ globally. Passengers are thus encouraged to contact the airline they will be travelling with well in advance to establish the latest duty-free LAGs regulations in effect in the country they will be transferring through, and ultimately terminating their journey in. ACSA continues to work closely with the South African Civil Aviation Authority in this regard whilst duty-free sales staff remain ready in-store to assist passengers. Duty-free shoppers are reminded that their LAGs purchases must be kept sealed in the special plastic bag, given at the point of purchase, until they reach their final destination.
