Our retail activities include core retail, advertising, motor vehicle parking and car rental. These activities are usually undertaken by partner companies, including expert concessionaires and tenants.

We are currently exploring opportunities to provide more retail at all our major airports.

The duty free shopping mall at O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) is testimony to ACSA’s competence as a ‘best-of-breed’ airport retail developer. The mall features three vast structural nodes that project between aircraft, exposing passengers to an experience of aeronautical activity, world-class shopping and the best of African culture.

The domestic terminal at ORTIA boasts a mezzanine level dedicated to retail activities.

Advertising

We have purpose-built large format advertising into the terminal structure and are using new electronic media. The latter include techniques to provide ‘split-screen’ advertising on the same large format screens as flight information. The DVD-quality advertising, driven by sophisticated satellite delivery, allows video, animation and static material to be sent remotely and instantly to the screens.

We are also partnering an advertising company to build a dynamic advertising wall within the terminal.

When the major construction projects at ORTIA have been completed, ACSA will resume intensive advertising. We will consolidate our advertising space into bigger, more impactful advertising structures in the airport environment. We are also moving towards creating opportunities for brand reinforcement by setting up brand zones or areas with naming rights for specific brands - so that advertisers can establish brand dominance. We believe this will increase the number of large advertising spenders who typically seek such opportunities.

In addition, ACSA is seeking to enhance the airport retail shopping experience for travellers by establishing advertising sites beyond the security check-points where passengers will be able to meet and interact with advertisers in specially created promotional lounges.
