ACSA Airport Security foil Drug Trafficking at O. R. Tambo International Airport
Friday, March 16, 2012 | 00:00
AIRPORTS Company South Africa (ACSA) was instrumental in foiling an attempt at drug trafficking through O. R. Tambo International Airport, on Wednesday (14 March 2012) afternoon.
The suspects that were immediately detained and handed over to the SAPS were carrying narcotics which were detected by the x-ray scanning equipment at the airport. SAPS have since confirmed that the narcotics in question were cocaine and mandrax, with an estimated street value of R1,8 Million.
“The arrests are a testament to the fact that our equipment and the intensified security measures that we have adopted at all airports, together with our stakeholders like the SAPS, are working. We will not tolerate any criminal activities at any of the ACSA airports,” said Tebogo Mekgoe, Acting General Manager at O.R. Tambo International.
The arrests come as ACSA, together with its stakeholders intensify their efforts around general crime in and around the airport precinct with a particular focus on baggage pilferage; animal and human trafficking.
In the past five years ACSA has seen improvement in security systems, processes, infrastructure and the appointment of a full time manager of public safety and security responsible for the value chain which has also added significant value.
“Acsa commends SAPS for their ability to attend to the scene quickly, minimizing any disruption to airport services during this incident. ACSA endeavours to provide a safe, friendly and welcoming environment to all travellers and in conjunction with its stakeholders is trying to make the overall airport experience a crime-free one,” said Mekgoe.
