Runway restrictions at George Airport improves
Wednesday, February 24, 2010 | 00:00

Flight operations improve

Following the South African Civil Aviation Authority’s (SACAA) analysis of the friction and macro texture tests performed on the runway at George Airport last week Monday (15 February 2010) at its request, the SACAA has advised Airports Company South Africa that the runway at George Airport complies with the Standards required by them.

“We are extremely pleased with the SACAA’s finding and are delighted that the SACAA felt it appropriate to lift the restrictions that have been in place since the 12th February,” said Colin Naidoo, ACSA spokesperson for George Airport.

Importantly, the tests were requested as part of the SACAA’s formal investigation into the 7 December 2009 SA Airlink aircraft accident at George Airport, and that investigation is still underway.  Whilst the runway at George Airport has now been found compliant, the cause of the SA Airlink accident has not yet been determined conclusively and the SACAA is undertaking further research to aid it in its investigations.

Furthermore, aircraft now cleared to land at George Airport during rainy conditions are required to meet certain performance characteristics, such as requiring less than the full runway length of two kilometres for safe landing and take-off.

Airports Company South Africa remains hopeful that the SACAA will soon be in a position to lift the runway restriction in its entirety.  Whilst we regret the resulting inconvenience experienced by our passengers, their safety and peace of mind are of utmost concern to us.  We therefore continue to seek a speedy resolve in partnership with the SACAA and will do whatever may be required to advance aviation safety.

For any queries passengers and airport visitors are encouraged to call the George Airport helpline on 044 876 9310, or their airline for changes to flight schedules.
