Destination Cape Town: The Flavour of the World
Friday, September 26, 2003 | 00:00 About 300 leaders from the tourism, aviation, hotel, car-rental and related fields will gather at Cape Town International Convention Centre to engage each other on growing business opportunities and addressing the current booming Cape Town tourism market.
 
The two-day ACSA airline destination workshop is a partnership with the Office of the Premier of the Western Cape, The City of Cape Town and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).
 
The purpose of the workshop is for all those involved in the tourism chain to discuss sustainable ways of offering an integrated service, while addressing the issues of seasonality and infrastructure capacity.
 
Workshop facilitator and ACSA Group Executive: Business and Market Development, Mr Siva Pillay, believes that inclusive of leisure seekers, holiday home buyers and medical tourists are among those also finding Cape Town attractive.
 
"There is growing evidence to confirm that Cape Town is indeed becoming the flavour of the world. Currently serviced by 17 domestic and international airlines, there are however, more than 30 airlines attending the two-day workshop, meeting with 40 tour operators for dynamic business development," Pillay explains.
 
Cape Town International Airport recorded a strong 8.5 percent overall growth to more than 5 million passengers in the financial year to March 31, 2003. Conservative projections based on IATA forecasts (which took into account the SARS effect and the war in Iraq) indicate that passenger numbers at the airport will grow at an average of 4.6 percent over the next ten years.
 
This can be attested to by the growth in air-seats offer for the coming summer season. One new charter company, AV8Air, will start direct flights to and from Manchester, UK between November and March 2004 under the CT2 Brand. German charter operator Condor has applied to the National Department of Transport for new flights between November and March 2004. Existing charter operator LTU is starting it's seasonal operation one month earlier, adding three additional flights from Germany.
 
The traditionally scheduled carriers are also adding frequencies to cater for the increasing demand. South African Airways will add two more flights to London, bringing total flights to nine weekly; British Airways offering 10 weekly flights; Virgin, with 3 weekly flights to London, is planning to go to 6 between December and January 2004.
 
As far as new operations are concerned, Nationwide will start a weekly service to London; Air Botswana is actively persuing the necessary bilateral conditions to start operating flights from Maun; Kenya Airways will operate two-weekly direct flights from Nairobi and SAA is looking for equipment availability to offer a three-weekly service to Frankfurt.
 
The conference will be officially open by Western Cape Province Premier, Marthinus van Schalkwyk. Other speakers include the province's Economic Development and Tourism MEC, Mr. Ebrahim Rasool and some prominent airlines' top brass such as Mr. Don Hunter, Country Manager Southern Africa and Indian Ocean of Cathay Pacific and BARSA Chairman.
 
Various companies will also be exhibiting at the workshop to show their commitment to Destination Cape Town and perhaps showcase their plans to grow facilities in line with the increase demand.
 
"ACSA is heartened by the strong support received from the government and other partners in the airline and tourism business, " Pillay concluded.
