We are pleased with the phenomenal passenger traffic growth that we have been experiencing in the recent past. Big events such as the cycle tour, one of the busiest weekends in the year for air travel, contribute towards this. This weekend alone, over 60 000 passengers will pass through the airport.
With seat availability already a challenge for the airlines, additional measures have been put in place to ensure that we accommodate the passenger influx. Passengers are also reminded to ensure that they arrive early at the airport, at least 90 minutes prior to domestic departures, in order for them to find parking, check-in and enjoy their flight. We appeal to travellers to be patient whilst they are being processed.
Part of the additional measures include the recently opened 300 additional parking bays at the popular low cost, long term parking facility at O.R. Tambo International Airport .The parking facility, now boasts a total of 2400 covered parking bays with 24 hour security. It is situated a short ten minutes away at the Super South Gate near Emperors Palace and is complimented by a free shuttle service that runs every 15 minutes.
People planning to fly out of O.R. Tambo will find this facility a safe, hassle-free and cost-effective alternative to arranging for transfers or parking at the airport’s other existing parking facilities. ACSA has gone to great lengths to ensure reliability and convenience.
Due to the high demand for parking at the Super South Gate facility, visitors are advised to check availability just before leaving for the airport. While we are working hard to make the parking experience at O.R. Tambo seamless, visitors should always keep in mind that our parking facilities are subject to availability due to the current high demand.
This facility may be convenient for 1Time, Nationwide, BA and Kulula passengers as the airlines have made arrangements for bicycles to be dropped off near the facility. South African Airways’ passengers must hand their bicycles in at the specially designated area at the Domestic Arrivals Terminal B Kerbside. Directional signage has been provided.
Furthermore, there is another low fare parking facility near the terminal building at Shade 3. It costs R20 a day and has 650 bays. The airport has more than 10 000 parking bays.
Arriving at the airport early, at least one and a half hours before, is critical to allow sufficient time for parking and check-in. We have established an SMS service (send “parking” to 35007) for up to the minute parking availability information at O.R. Tambo.
Also, for the convenience of airport users and due to the large number of parking bays distributed around the airport precinct, a system to assist drivers, indicating open areas for quick and hassle free parking has been developed. This system is also accessible via the website (www.acsa.co.za). There are 14 large electronic parking sign boards to help direct traffic flow as drivers enter the airport precinct to help drivers choose a parking option as early as possible.
