Tembisa, Johannesburg, 7 June 2013 – O.R. Tambo International Airport will donate 191 pairs of shoes to the most needy learners at Moduopo Primary School.
Overall, a total of 1000 learners from communities in and around the airport will benefit from the shoe drive this winter.
“O.R. Tambo International Airport is committed to creating opportunities that make a difference for people of all ages in the communities we serve”, said Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, Communication and Brand Management Manager at O.R. Tambo International Airport.
“These children experience poverty on a daily basis. Being able to provide them with shoes will not only motivate them to get up during the cold winter months, but will also making it conducive to focus on their studies,” added Batyashe-Fillis.
“As educators it is difficult for us to watch our learners come to school in severely damaged shoes. When we consider how cold Johannesburg can be, the contribution by O.R. Tambo International Airport has come to us at the right time”, said Masilo Serumula, Principal at Moduopo Primary School.
According to the chairperson of the school’s Governing Body, Pinky Mofokeng, O.R. Tambo International Airport has played a key role in empowering the children of Tembisa. “Many of our children already complain of the cold. As it stands we were worried about how they would cope when winter hits”, she said.
With a little help from Airports Company South Africa what could have been harsh and unbearable cold weather, will now be a bit warmer and more comfortable.
